Tips for a Healthy You

Measuring our happiness by what we own or have accomplished makes for a very sad living. We will naturally always want more. As Margaret Lee Runbeck said, “Happiness is not a state to arrive at, but a manner of traveling.”

How does counseling work?

The success of counseling is based on the relationship that is built between the therapist and the client or clients, as well as on the commitment the client has to meeting his or her goals.

The empathetic, compassionate and open relationship that is developed with the counselor allows the client to process his or her situation such that he or she may respond appropriately to it. The therapist, based on his/her knowledge and experience, will guide the client through the process of resolving the current situation in a supportive and caring manner.

What will happen in a session?

During the first 50 minute session you are expected to share your concerns or reasons for your visit. Based on this information and my feedback we will set some the treatment goals. We will meet either weekly or biweekly and during those meetings we will work on attaining your goals. In between sessions it will be beneficial for you to process and think about what was discussed in session.

How many sessions will be required?

The length of treatment is determined by the treatment goals. Some people come to counseling to find ways to respond to unexpected changes; others are interested in personal growth or self exploration. Your commitment is also crucial in quick resolution of your situation.

Is therapy confidential?

Confidentiality is an important building block of the therapeutic relationship, it provides trust and openness. The law also helps the therapist protect the privacy and confidentiality of all communication between the therapist and the client. Information will not be disclosed without permission from the client. However, there are some legal exceptions to this law. These exceptions include:

  • Suspected child/elderly/disabled abuse. The therapist is required by law to report this immediately to the appropriate authorities.
  • If the client is threatening to hurt himself/herself or others.
  • If the law requires disclosure of information.

You will receive written and detailed information about your rights to privacy and confidentiality.

  • What is my out-of-network deductible and has it been met?
  • How much do you pay for out-of-network?
